Sallandse Heuvelrug

Discover the Salland Hills

Dynamic landscape with striking ridge and meandering river.
National Park De Sallandse Heuvelrug between Hellendoorn and Holten is one of the largest contiguous dry heathlands in Europe. On the east side of this lateral moraine, which was formed some 150,000 years ago, meanders the Overijssel River, the Regge. Recently, the course of this river has been restored to its former glory. The unique combination of the Twents Regge valley on one side and De Sallandse Heuvelrug on the other makes for a dynamic landscape with unprecedented opportunities for nature lovers, recreationists and outdoor sports enthusiasts alike.

Welcome to Holterberg

Holterberg is the southern side of the Sallandse Heuvelrug. On top of Holterberg you will find a cozy square with several restaurants, miniature golf, a playground and Natuurdiorama Holterberg with the forest of Daantje Das.
The impressive Canadian cemetery with information center is also easily accessible from here.
Holterberg, with ample parking on top of the mountain, is also an ideal starting point for cycling and hiking tours.

Sallandse Heuvelrug Outdoor Center
In the renewed Buitencentrum Sallandse Heuvelrug you can get all information about the nature, geology and (cultural) history of this unique area. Besides Staatsbosbeheer, the Institute for Nature Education and Sustainability (IVN), the Center for Nature and Environmental Education, Observatory Hellendoorn and the National Park De Sallandse Heuvelrug also find their home here.
The outdoor center is also the starting point of several trails and the Heideslak. The Heideslak is a unique option for people who are less agile. Along the way, the driver tells fun stories and points out the beautiful things in nature.
